Seaward Engineered Plastics offer many unique design features that result in several advantages over conventional timber piles and plastic wrapped steel piles. One Piece ConstructionSeaward Engineered Plastics are manufactured from structurally reinforced Duralin in a continuous process that allows Seaward to provide the pile or timber in any length as a single piece. Like traditional piling there are no joints to make up or seals to install. Friendly to the EnvironmentSeaward Engineered Plastics are friendly to the environment. Its plastic matrix is formed from 100% recycled plastic. Also, the Seaward Engineered Plastics can be used to replace wood piling or timber treated with creosote, a chemical listed by the EPA as toxic (U0061) (RCRA). Impervious to Marine BorersThe Duralin matrix of Seaward Engineered Plastics is impervious to marine borers, the major cause of traditional timber pile failure. This advantage results in a significant savings in piling inspection, maintenance, and repair and reconstruction costs. Recycled PlasticAs the basis for Duralin, Seaward uses only recycled plastic. Sources for this raw material are plastic milk jugs, soap bottles and juice containers. As an example, each foot of pile uses the equivalent of approximately 240 one-gallon milk jugs, thus diverting large quantities of plastic from our nations landfills into a useful and environmentally sound purpose. RecyclableSince Seaward Engineered Plastics are principally made of plastic, they too can be recycled. If a piling or timber should ever be broken or damaged it can be ground up and made into a new piling. Non-MagneticIn its fiberglass reinforced version, the Seaward Engineered Plastics piling and timber have no metal and thus is non-conductive and non-magnetic. This makes the pile particularly well suited for facilities where low electrical conductivity and low magnetic signatures are important design requirements. Low MaintenanceSeaward Engineered Plastics have been designed for low maintenance. The slick hard outer skin creates a low coefficient of friction on berthing vessels, thus reducing the lateral load on the piling as well as abrasion of the ships paint system and the piles surface. The low coefficient of friction will also reduce ice forces due to floating and sheet ice. Unlike wooden piles or timbers, the Seaward Engineered Plastic can be sawed without the concern of exposing untreated areas to the weather or to premature borer attack. Laboratory and Field TestedSeaward Engineered Plastics have been thoroughly tested in the laboratory and the field to ensure that all design and performance characteristics are met. High Energy AbsorptionIn its fiberglass reinforced version, the SEAPILE Composite Marine Piling is highly ductile and, under excessive load, will continue to bend (without breaking) beyond its elastic limit. While the pile would be permanently deformed if loaded beyond its elastic limit, this feature represents a valuable reserve capacity for accidental overloads. This is a distinct advantage compared to traditional timber piles which are brittle and break under excessive load. Custom Colors AvailableWhile black is the standard color, the Seaward Engineered Plastic can be made in other colors on a custom basis. For example, red or green piles can be manufactured if the product is to be used as an aid to navigation. Uniform PropertiesSeaward Engineered Plastics are engineered products of uniform dimension with known, predictable strength and stiffness properties. This is a distinct advantage over traditional timber piles, which exhibit significant variability due to the type of wood, varying diameter over the length of the pile, the presence of knots and cracks, and other similar problems.
